British Soccer Legend Robson Dead At 75

One of England's most beloved sporting figures, Sir Bobby Robson, yielded to his courageous fight with cancer recently at the age of 75. British soccer fans mourned his passing after a lifetime in the game, first as a player and then a team manager and elder statesman.

Robson enjoyed a productive career as a player that spanned 20 years and was spent primarily in the English Premier League with Fulham and West Bromwich Albion. He also competed for England's national team on twenty occasions, netting four goals in international play.

After his retirement in'68 as an active player, he found more fame as a team manager both in England and on the international level. In the EPL, his guidance transformed Ipswich Town from a laughing stock to a league powerhouse and he would lead the club for well over a decade. He would also serve as the England National Team manager for 8 years, as well as managing club teams in Portugal and Spain. He ended his career in British football with a stint as manager of Newcastle United that ended in 2004.

Robson earned even more love and admiration from his countrymen due to his public battle with cancer. Although a brain tumor left him partially paralyzed in 2006, he never wavered in his commitment to English football or to raising money and awareness for cancer treatment. After being diagnosed with terminal lung cancer in 2007, he started the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation, and raised well over one million pounds for the Sir Bobby Robson Cancer Trials Research Centre in Newcastle.

Even two men who seldom see eye to eye on anything--Former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho and Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson--were in agreement on Robson's greatness:

"I wanted to and I will keep with me always the Bobby Robson of every day, a person who had extraordinary passion for life and for football, with an extraordinary enthusiasm. Bobby Robson is one of those people who never die, not so much for what he did in his career, for one victory more or less, but for what he knew to give to those who had, like me, the good fortune to know him and walk by his side. My thoughts and embraces go to all his loved ones."

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson shared his own touching comments:

"In my 23 years working in England there is not a person I would put an inch above him. I was never too big or proud to ask him for advice, which he gave freely and unconditionally. And I'm sure I am speaking for a lot of people when I say that. I mourn the passing of a great friend, a wonderful individual, a tremendous football man and somebody with passion and knowledge of the game that was unsurpassed."

"His character was hewn out of the coalface; developed by the County Durham mining background that he came from. His parents instilled in him the discipline and standards which forged the character of a colossal human being. He added his own qualities to that which he passed on to his sons. The strength and courage he showed over the past couple of years when battling against his fifth bout of cancer was indescribable. Always a smile, always a friendly word with never a mention of his own problems."

"The world, not just the football world, will miss him. Let's hope it won't be long before another like him turns up because we could never get enough of them."

Bookmakers offered odds on the host city choice, with Rio listed as second favorite at +200. Chicago had been the wagering favorite at most books, particularly after President Obama got involved personally in the US bid effort. Chicago was bet as high as a -300 favorite, while Madrid and Tokyo were priced in the +250 range. Some suggest that Tokyo didnt deserve to have such short odds, but was the beneficiary of regional pride from the notoriously enthusiastic betting population of Japan. Despite some media attention to the betting odds, bookmakers reported that they didn't receive a lot of action on the event.

"The Isaac Bell Novels" is a new hit series by "one of the greatest adventure novelists of our time" (imdb), Clive Cussler. The Wrecker is the sequel to the successful first Isaac Bell novel, titled The Chase. (The next release in the series is scheduled for June 1, 2010.)

The main character of the of this new Clive Cussler series is a detective by the name of Isaac Bell, a fearless figure of physical prowess equaling James Bond who simultaneously possesses observational skills and powers of deduction rivaling Sherlock Holmes.

As luck would have it, Isaac Bell is an independently wealthy heir of a major American banking family, his detective work more of a passion and obsession than a job-for-money.

In The Wrecker, the Southern Pacific Railroad hires the Van Dorn detective agency and Isaac Bell to capture a saboteur that has been targeting their construction sites with devastating effects. Southern Pacific's financing for a project to build a new line between the northern and southern portions of the American West coast is threatened. If any more sabotage ensues, it could potentially sink the entire mega-corporation.

Unbeknownst to all until the very end of the book, The Wrecker is a regular member of the inner circles of Southern Pacific Railroad president Osgood Hennessy, even courting the railroad baron's "unspeakably beautiful" daughter Lillian. He's a formidable adversary, perhaps as brilliant as Isaac Bell himself.

The Wrecker's agenda turns out to be the hostile takeover of not only the Southern Pacific Railroad but as a side effect gaining complete control of the entire United States railroad system, at a time in history when the wealthiest men in America were railroad barons such as Vanderbilt, Harriman and others.

Notorious as an avid automobile enthusiast, one reason why Clive Cussler may have picked the early 1900's as the setting for his new series may well have been to give him an opportunity to write about car chases in classic automobiles from the turn of the last century.

Automobiles featured in The Wrecker include a Packard Grey Wolf, the 1907 Model 35 Thomas Flyer, winner of the New York to Paris race of 1908, Isaac Bell's classic Locomobile, and a Bugatti Type 41 Royale.

Clive Cussler is a man of many passions, one of the best known and most obvious being his love of the ocean, as evidenced by his countless action novels revolving in and around water. But the fact that he has chosen to live in Colorado, far from the any great body of water, suggests that he also loves the rugged, arid and mountainous landscapes of the American West.

The Wrecker gives a glimpse into this other side of Cussler, his love of the mountains and the still-not-entirely-tamed American West, a contagious passion that is likely to rub off on a whole new generation of Wild West enthusiasts and reinvigorate many old ones. Ricky Oh is really one of the strangest, one of the most bizarre action films ever created. It is literally downright insane, and even after it's over, you'll have a hard time believing that some nuts really went out and made a movie like this. It was based on a Korean comic book series of the same name, and the result is a flick that belongs on any must download internet movies list just because it's so... Well, strange.

The movie focuses on the title character, Ricky-Oh, a young martial artist who gets himself put in prison for... Some reason or other (the movie is kind of vague on this point, as well as many others). Within the prison walls, he must face the members and leaders of four gangs that run the inmates, each one the master of their own strange style of Kung Fu.

The movie is nothing if not violent, but the violence is so absurd that it's not really offensive or disturbing so much as it is funny and weird. It reaches Loony Toons proportions. In one fight scene, a badguy rips out his own intestine to strangle Ricky with, immediately after Ricky, having received a slash across a major artery, pulls the vein out and ties it in a knot.

You could be grossed out by this scene, but you'll probably be too busy laughing and scratching your head to really be shocked or disturbed, and this isn't even the most bizarre scene of the film.

A later fight scene has a villain transforming into a giant monster. By giant monster, we really mean "A stuntman in a really, really, really bad costume". You can practically see the zipper on the back of this thing. In another movie, the fakeness of the special effects might have been a problem. In Ricky-Oh, it's a big part of the charm.

The story actually, surprisingly, has a heart under all this surreal violence. The real story of the film revolves around Ricky trying to fight for freedom and dignity for all of his fellow inmates, who are constantly harassed and bullied by the warden and his spoiled rotten man-child son. It's about humanity, empathy and understanding more so than it is about violence.

But in the end, the real appeal is the strangeness of it, the bizarre violence, just how far over the top it goes. It doesn't go too far, it goes way past "too far", it boards a shuttle and flies off planet from "way too far". In the end, this is why the movie is a cult legend in the pantheon of strange action films.

And still, the ending is actually somewhat uplifting and positive. In a movie full of surprises, the optimistic ending may well be the biggest surprise of all. That's really the appeal of the film. It grosses you out, it makes you laugh, it shows you some weird stuff you've never seen before and will never see again, and then somehow in the course of the events, it's actually gripped your heart and you actually care about the characters. - 2361
