Basic Things To Know About RC Hobbies

By Michael Castelli

RC hobbies are becoming increasingly popular with children and adults alike. However, although many of us have heard the term RC not all of us really do understand what it means. In this article we explain a little bit more about what RC is.

The term RC stands for "remote control" and allows you to control one device with another without them being attached to each other. The first actual remote control device to be introduced in 1903 at the Paris of Academy of Science was the Telekino invented by Leonardo Torres Quevada. This was a small robot that was able to execute certain commands given to it that were transmitted using electromagnetic waves.

The majority of remote control devices that are used in the home for say controlling the TV use an infrared beam light and it is this that commands the target device to carry out certain functions. However these devices need to be directly in line of sight of the target object and cannot be used at any great distance.

When it comes to devices used for controlling objects in RC hobbies it is radio frequency waves that are used to transmit the commands. Unlike infrared beams these devices don't need to be in sight of the object that they are controlling and can be used from some distance away.

All remote control cars, planes and boats will need four components in order for them to be controlled. Along with the transmitter you need a receiver, motor and power source. It is the transmitter which you hold in your hand that sends the signals to the receiver in the RC vehicle and which controls the motor. It is the transmitter that gives you control over the movements of the remote control vehicle.

In order for the motor to have power then the vehicle is fitted with either a rechargeable battery pack or regular batteries can be used. However, for some of the more advanced types of RC vehicles which can reach speeds in excess of 70 mph these are powered by either nitro methane or normal gasoline.

Along with remote control vehicles being something that one can enjoy for a few hours at the weekend, there are some people who will race against each other with theirs. There are clubs around the world where enthusiasts can meet and talk about the various models as well as compete against one and other.

Although many people think RC hobbies are expensive, you can if you wish pick up a pretty good model for around $100 to start with. If you are considering getting involved in this particular hobby it is worth considering buying one that is already built rather than attempting to build your own initially. - 2361
