Why People Larp

By David Borg

LARP stands for Live Action Role Playing and is pursued by a wide variety of men and women who enjoy losing themselves in a game. It may be a strictly controlled gamin scenario, with rules and regulations, or it may just be a simple meeting of historical recreationists. No matter what the purpose is, there is a number of different people who enjoy these games.

Many people who get involved with LARPing tend to be an imaginative, if somewhat socially different, group. They generally enjoy reading genre fiction and are often very intelligent. Those social differenced, though, can be the impetus to bring them together in a game. They understand what it's like to be different from others and enjoy spending time with other people who have similar experiences.

What attracts a lot of people to role playing game is because it is a way to become someone else. It encourages the players interact and maybe forget some of their natural shyness. LARPing is proving to be a great venue for people to become bold and outspoken without "much" ridicule.

Usually when participating in a role play, you'll find distinctively different types of players who play for different reasons. Some people view it as a competitive sport (the battle oriented role plays), others may simply view it as a fantasy game. Some players enjoy it as a medium to share a story, or act out history.

Other players enjoy LARPing that is based on the stories they enjoy reading, or other RPGs they played in the past. It is a good way to escape from the humdrum day-to-day life and become a part of the literature they've always liked.

LARPing is a way that people can involve themselves with their favorite fantasy stories. Those that have a passion for the fictional stories can become so immersed in them that participating in a LARP can make them feel like they belong there. It is like knowing the characters and the settings of the stories and being able to create that world and be a part of it.

In most cases you will find three distinct types of players: the dramatist, the gamer, and the immersionist. The dramatist enjoys the acting within any scene, the gamer gets finds interest the battles, and the puzzles, and the immersionist tries to maintain the fully authentic feel of the story.

Overall, many people like LARPing and find a great deal of enjoyment from acting out different roles in different settings from stories of different genres. It's a great way to lose oneself in a character or story. - 2361
