Successful People Know The Cosmic Ordering Secrets

By Janette Stretens

As more and more people learn about cosmic ordering, more and more are looking to get involved with it. Place an order and learn to move forward!

Yes, there are lots of people out there who do get what they consciously desire, but what about the people who don't or who can't make it happen? Do the people who succeed know something that others don't? Do cosmic ordering services really exist?

Think about the last time that someone you know got a promotion or won a great prize. Whether you know it or not, you were placing an order. Disdain and envy at anothe's success tells the universe that you are someone who welcomes poverty and misery, and that these negative emotions are in fact your status quo.

Consider going to dinner at a nice restaurant. What do you do if you see someone there with a lovely meal? You don't get angry about not having it, you just get excited and order it for yourself! You'd hope that they loved their dinner and you would be happy for themselves.

If all that is true, why would you not find joy in another's success? You can delight in the pleasure that they receive knowing that your success will be just as sweet. If you get bitter, angry or disappointed it only means you don't believe you can have it too. At that moment, you place an order for failure.

Lots of world religious out there tell us that the power of prayer can get us anything we want, although we need to think about how belief fits into that. More and more scientists are finding that quantum physics is a lot like a belief system and all the evidence is pointing to religious dogma as being true.

What makes this possible is the application of the mind's energy. Don't think about this as something that takes away from religious doctrine, but in fact reinforces it.

There are too many things that can make you fail if you are just looking at positive affirmations. If you have had problems in the past, this can be reinforced and it can take away a lot of the good that you have created. Some affirmations do stick, but it takes time if the old beliefs are still around.

What do the cosmic ordering secrets have to do with this? Start with a through house cleaning of your mind before you move forward. Remember that it is okay to accept the gifts that the universe wants to give you and start with a clean slate.

Various methods help you to clean out the old. Just like a vacuum sweeper is more effective than a small toothbrush to clean the carpet, so are newer scientific ways more effective in making your mind available to accept the new way of life you desire.

You can actually use self-hypnosis, subliminal affirmations and binaural frequency waves to help you get where you want. They will let you get rid of your old, tired thinking and then you'll find that you have lots of things going your way. Remember that the cosmic ordering secrets can really help your mind, and that if your mind is sabotaging you, you aren't going to get very far.

Remember that your mind hates change. It will fight tooth and nail to keep you at the same place, so make sure that you use the cosmic ordering system to get your needs met. You'll even find that you can "trick" your mind into going along, to becoming more dissatisfied with things as they stand.

You can have anything you want from the cosmic ordering system. Make sure that your order is what you really want and help it to come to reality with your belief. - 2361

The Unique Spartan Sword

By Todd Alan

The one name, Sparta, has sparked off many a debate and accolade on the Greeks and the Spartan sword was a part of Greek history. Athens and Sparta, the two rival states, which fought for supremacy among the Greek city states consisted of brave warriors who were trained in classical warfare from a very young age.

Having been trained in skilled combat, the great Spartan sword was the most deadly weapon for a soldier in a phalanx. A high degree of discipline and knowledge was required for the fighters to maintain their formations in combat.

A brief and hurtful battle during the many wars like the Polynesian War, the Greco Persian Wars, the War of the Marathons, eulogized by many a poet and historian, often speak of the Spartan sword and the shield as the best weapons for the battles.

A statue of King Lyonidas I in Sparta is a perfect example of a warrior king, something that every Spartan learned how to do since birth, fight for their honor and respect for the land. The land was above everything else and one would either come back a winner from a battle or die for ones own land. King Lyonidas Spartan sword held ready for action in combat stands truth to the Spartans significance on fighting for their rights and their state. The state was above everything else.

Life has moved past from the fifth century BC. Modern methods of fighting have evolved and people have evolved with new evolutions. At the press of a button man is able to conquer, demolish a whole country, without so much as moving an extra muscle. The age of new developments has pushed us on to new times the Greeks would never have imagined. But they were the original starters of democracy, they sowed the seeds of a civilized democratic society, taught the world true, disciplined methods of fighting. The Spartan sword remains today a symbol of a land which raises its artistic weapon high over its head, ready for battle, ready for anything to die with passion for ones country and ones fellow soldiers. - 2361

Dance Studios - Young Students Need To Be Taken Seriously

By Sarah Wilkiamson

Finding a school that will take young children seriously can sometimes be difficult. For many schools, it's more about the money than considering the talent they have on board. In fact, the wrong school, wrong curriculum or wrong teacher can discourage and ruin your child's ambition to dance forever. They soon quit, never turning back again.

Emotions run deep at this age and once the seeds of dislike are sown it is hard to erase them. It is very important for your child's progress that they like their dance lessons right from the beginning. This will help them to progress faster and learn the new skills better.

One of the problems with less professional schools and instructors is the 'one size fits all' approach to training. Many teachers are expecting pupils to perform out of their depth, insisting younger children take lessons more suited to an older student.

Lesson structuring: Good schools will be aware of their students and will structure the lessons to fit young children's needs. The lessons will be appropriate for young students so they do not get overwhelmed and frustrated. In fact it takes quite a bit of effort and determination from the school to structure lessons that are just right for children. This means that the school will very likely be equally attentive to any student that they enroll.

How this helps your child?

It makes learning easy: proper structuring will ensure that the learning process takes into account the child's age and level of advancement.

More enjoyable: The lessons will have fun mixed in with the discipline which will allow the pupil to relax and enjoy learning. When this happens they will be eager to learn new skills and will not be intimidated by them.

Easy to remember: This type of structuring makes it easy to remember. This allows the child to be able to achieve skills that they might otherwise not have been able to handle.

Your child will learn faster: When they retain lessons and learn new skills in a relaxed fashion these children will be able to learn faster and enjoy the curriculum.

Your child's needs should be the most important thing to consider when you select a dance school. Sometimes all it takes is the right questions from a caring parent to uncover the schools that take their pupils seriously. A love of dance is something many children grow up with and giving them the opportunity to fully transfer what they are feeling inside into motion and music is a wonderful, lasting gift. Appreciation of the arts can start very young, but if it is discouraged it may never return. - 2361

The Musette Accordion: A French Popular Musical Tradition

By Sandy

The accordion evolved from the 5,000-year-old Chinese mouth organ called the sheng, the first known instrument to use the free vibrating reed principle, which is the basis of the accordion's sound production. There are several different accounts of how the sheng found its way to Europe and many conflicting versions of the history and evolution of the accordion. However, it is well-known that the popularity of accordion music reached its peak in France before it spread to the rest of the world.

The subject of this article is Musette accordion, the accordion music that was almost synonymous with popular French music for at least fifty years, from the early 1900s throughout the 1950s.

Musette is the name of a goatskin bagpipe that was a popular music instrument in the Auvergne region of France during 19th century. When immigrants from this region came to Paris in search of work between 1800 and 1900, they brought their musettes with them. In the back rooms of these modest cafes and some auvergnat immigrants opened small shops selling coal and wine and, eventually, modest dance halls. Bal musettes was the common terminolgy used. On Saturday nights and Sunday afternoons, their patrons danced the traditional Auvergnat dance to the music of the musette.

During the latter part of the 19th century, Italian immigrant workers toting their accordions began flooding the capital of France. Paris 19th district where the Italians settled came alive with the sound of diatonic accordion music. At first, accordions were accepted into most musette music bands. Where the auvergnat and italian communities of paris gathered to dance to accordion and musette music and the bal musettes, which had been places where the musette instrument was played, had become establishments. The first joint musette and accordion music performance was in 1905.

A few years later, however, with the appearance of the half-diatonic, half-chromatic accordion, the Italian accordionists tried to introduce new dances into the bal musettes, playing music that was outside of the realm of the musette. Further aggravated with the appearance of the chromatic accordion, this led to a serious conflict.

The Italians left to play their accordions in different locations - which they continued to call bal musettes. By drums and the main dance was the waltz and at these new bal musettes, the accordion was the principal instrument, accompained. Accordion music as well as the new bal musettes became popular quickly. Accordionists were playing in the streets and their music soon became the most popular in Paris, and across the country. Accordions had become the preferred accompanying instrument of French singers as well and the musette accordion style, or music genre

The bal musettes re-opened with fervor after World War I, and musette accordion music continued to flourish in the period between the two World Wars. Many new bal musettes opened to cater to the masses in need of entertainment, and members of the upper classes would go to these places looking for adventure. Before the Second World War, certain enterprising dance establishments even organized fake police raids and gunshots for the benefit of these classy visitors.

The musette accordion genre had definitively gained the upper hand over music played by the musette instrument. In the 1930s, jazz penetrated into the musette accordion style and by the 1940s, it was common to hear the 2 styles intermixed. After the Manouche banjoists and guitarists had joined the musette accordion bands, accordion musette music had become the most popular French music of its day,by the early 1950s.

The advent of rock, disco and newer dance music in the 1960s led to a decline of the musette accordion style. However, in the late 1980s and 1990s, popular music groups began to show interest in the musette accordion music and this inspiring music genre is experiencing a revival both in France and across the world. - 2361

What Is My,Your,The Serger Sewing Machine?

By David Trumble

For almost two decades, I have worked as a sewing machine technician. While most of the repairs and services I do deal with ordinary sewing machines, about one service out of five involves a serger. At first, I was threatened by working on sergers, because I was unfamiliar with them, but over time they have become much like any other service or repair.

Sergers are a bit mysterious. Many people sew for years and never even touch a serger. Indeed, many people have no clue what a serger even is.

So, I decided to find out what ordinary people thought of sergers. To do so, I visited a local Walmart, with my shopping list. As I walked down the aisle of different departments, I stopped people and asked them (total strangers). Do you know what a serger is? or Do you know where I could find a serger?

At the department store, people are busy looking for stuff themselves. They usually, look past you and ignore your presence. When you ask them a question, some people appear shocked or they just look past you in a blank stare. Fortunately, a few people were friendly and really tried to help me figure out what a serger is. People had some truly thoughtful opinions. A young boy thought it might be a team logo or a new video game. A lady thought it was a new type of fruit. One of the workers pointed me to hardware and said what I needed was a special kind of electrical fuse.

Now, your question remains. What is a serger?

A specialty sewing machine that sews a seam, overcasts the edge, and trims all in one pass is called a serger. Utility and decorative serger applications are common in clothing, and home decorating items. If the serged seam is hidden, it is said to be a utility stitch. If it is visible, it is considered a decorative application.

In 1846, Elias Howe patented the first practical sewing machine, but it was not until 1881 that the first serger was introduced by the Merrow Sewing Machine Company. This machine produced a two or three thread overlocking stitch often called a Merrow stitch. This provided a huge advancement over the typical straight stitch machine. The Merrow was able to sew a hem or seam while overcastting the edge of the fabric. In some cases this was done without trimming, but usually it included blades that trimmed the fabric leaving a beautifully finished edge.

Today the term serger has largely replaced its synonyms overlock and Merrow. Words like overcastting, overlocking, serging, and overedging are used (interchangeably|synonomously|the same.

Sergers were the domain of industry and factories until 1964, when the Baby Lock brand of home sergers launched. Several engineers at Juki had envisioned a scaled down version of the heavy industrial serger, but the Juki company was not interested. So the professionals formed their own new company and launched Baby Lock home sergers.

Overcastting stitches are produced on a serger by using lower and upper loopers, stitch fingers, and multiple threads. This compares to the locked stitch produced on most regular sewing machines that have hook assemblies and bobbins.

While the home serger is based on the heavy industrial sergers of the past, they are far more user friendly and offer a wider range of stitch options. Industrial sergers typically only sew a single overcastting stitch at between 5,000 and 9,500 stitches per minute. Home sergers may produce a handful of stitch variations up to 80 some different stitches. Home sergers are far easier to thread, adjust, and use than the industrial sergers. Home sergers operate between 1,500 stitches and 3,000 stitches per minute which is roughly twice the speed of a regular home sewing machine.

The serger may use two, three, four, five, six, seven, or eight different threads in various combinations to produce an amazing array of different utility and decorative overcastting stitches. Baby Lock a serger capable of producing up to 86 different serging stitches.

Today the home serger has become an integral part of a quality sewing room set up. It is capable of streamlining sewing projects producing far better quality while cutting sewing time in half. Yet, it does not replace the standard sewing machine.

So, simply stated: A serger (overlock, Merrow, overedge machine) is a specialty sewing machine that sews a seam, overcasts the fabric edge, and trims the fabric all in a single pass at a speed usually twice that of a ordinary sewing machine. - 2361

Exterior Home Design Includes Important Maintenance Projects

By Chad Dethelo

When considering exterior improvements, there are many basic areas that deserve a great deal of attention. There are the major maintenance and repair jobs that need to be done regularly; then there are the more aesthetic, decorative projects that are often more fun and creative.

Exterior projects that require timely maintenance include windowsill, gutter and downspout cleaning. While you are cleaning your windowsills, it is very important to inspect the seals for any leaks. If air is able to either come in or out of your house you are wasting valuable and expensive energy, both in the summer and winter. Water leaking into the house is will damage both your interior and exterior.

Water sitting or draining poorly off of your windowsills can cause immeasurable damage for the windows, not to mention the entire house. If there is water leaking behind the window seal and behind the fascia of the house, you can eventually have very large problems with how structurally sound your house is. Keeping the paint and caulk around your house's windows fresh will keep many of these problems at bay.

Cleaning the roofs, gutters, eaves and downspouts of a house are another very important part of exterior home maintenance. There are all kinds of available systems to keep the gutters covered, cleaned and free from the larger debris. Downspouts must also be maintained to ensure the rain that falls onto your house runs away from the property. Standing water can be very hazardous to the health of a home's foundation.

Landscaping is also a very important component to the structural condition as well as the beauty of your home. Again, many yards may need retaining walls and drains in certain places in their yards to wash the water away and keep the home firmly on its foundation. Healthy grass and tree root systems are beneficial to the integrity of the grounds surrounding the home as well. If you have trees that need pruning so they do not fall over or shed branches on to, or worse, in to your home, make sure you take care of this as quickly as possible.

There are many more aspects to landscaping, with many of components adding to what is typically referred to as curb appeal, or what looks good to passers by from the curb. These projects can be more fun and are less necessary, unless you let it go so far the neighbors begin to complain. Landscape architecture has sprung up as a very big business, and many companies specialize in yard maintenance. There are several options, from bushes and flowers, to extensive walkways and fountains. The main focus should be the outdoor elements that make you want to be outside, enjoying your yard. - 2361

Want To Get Discovered In The Acting World? Here Is How

By Bart Icles

The acting industry is a tough industry to get into. It is very competitive and cut-throat and unless you have some real talent and a good agent to represent you, you might not make it into the industry. There is hope for you though, if you are one hundred percent confident that you want to be an actor and won't stop until your dream has been fulfilled, there are some things that you can do to position yourself for success. I will go into each of these below.

1- You need to start training NOW! Work hard at it every day and don't stop no matter how good you think you are getting or how good others say that you are. Practice and work makes perfect.

2- Become a student. You should study the industry in depth. Learn how everything works. You should know exactly who casts what and what certain agents look for in an actor. Knowing these things will help you know what you need to do to get in.

3- This is very important; you need to figure out what your type of acting is. Pick a niche or genera and go for it.

4- Again, become a student. You need to learn the basics of business, professional networking, and how to market yourself. Self promotional skills are very important in the acting industry.

5- Learn how to audition. You may not believe it, but auditioning and acting on a set are two completely different things. If you can learn how to audition, you will be one step ahead of your competition.

6- I have always believed that in order to be successful in anything, you need to surround yourself with successful people. It is the same in the acting world. Seek out people who are already acting and are already in the industry. Stay away from those exactly like you, I mean those trying to get into the industry.

7- Talk to both actors who are currently acting. You should also talk to actors who have been aspiring to break into the industry for the last few years. You can learn a lot from both groups of people. Once you learn what to and what not to do, you will be much better off.

8- Always be humble and willing to learn. Once you think you know it all, you are setting yourself up for failure.

9- Once you start to understand what you are doing and start to see success, you should take the time to help others who are in the same position that you were once in. You will see that it will pay off for you in the long run.

If you truly take the time to start practicing these things on a regular basis, you will begin to move yourself into a position to more likely be discovered. If you let anything or any excuse stop you from becoming an actor, which simply means that it is not the industry for you. You should always be self evaluating yourself and make sure this is what you want. If you don't have a strong passion or burning desire to do this, you will never make it. - 2361

Hot topics that could turn off your date

By Tracy Anderson

If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say it. Nowhere is this saying truer than in dating. If you've found a new love interest that you plan to take out on Valentine's Day, you naturally want to say something memorable to impress her.

Oftentimes, however, men forget themselves and boldly speak their minds in complete disregard of the feelings of others. This can get you in hot water later, especially if your date doesn't share your beliefs and has a different opinion about the subject matter.

Since your main objective is to win her over, don't force your opinions and beliefs on her. You won't get her that way. Remember that most women are highly emotional about certain topics so it makes no sense in changing your date's mind about things overnight. Neither will it help your cause if you appear like an insensitive bigot or a one-sided fool.

When talking to her, choose your subjects wisely. Make her laugh and comfortable in your presence. Avoid controversial topics or those that produce negative emotions like guilt, anger, jealousy, fear, tension or depression. Learn to say what she likes to hear and you'll be surprised how far you'll go.

Wherever you go and whatever you do, steer clear of these hot topics. They won't get you anywhere and you'll only end up alienating your date:

Evolution vs. creation. Which came first - the chicken or the egg? No one knows for sure so don't ruin the perfect date by talking about something that can't be answered. You'll end up arguing instead of making love.

Religion. This is another highly debatable subject that you can both discuss for hours and agree on nothing. Many wars have been fought because of religion and even members of the same church are sometimes split when it comes to interpreting it. Don't put this in your list of topics.

Her boyfriend. Let her talk about her boyfriend if she wants to but don't make any bad remarks about him. Just listen to her and smile. Often she's just testing you to see how you'll react. Think about it: if she's not interested in you, why would she go out with you in the first place?

To get back at her, you can try reverse psychology by saying, "I'm glad you and your boyfriend are getting along pretty well and I'm happy for both of you. It's hard finding the perfect guy nowadays." That will make you the perfect gentleman and will give her something to think about.

Your frustration with women. This isn't the time to talk about your boring love life or your misfortunes with other members of the opposite sex. She'll think you're a loser and will have second thoughts about dating you again.

Don't be bitter about your past or dwell on your bad relationships. Keep the conversation pleasant and make it appear you love everything about women - the way they dress, their charms, their passion and femininity. Your date will love you for that! - 2361

By Rashel Dan

No special celebration and occasion is without some kind of face painting. With a fun face painting design, your kids can enjoy being tigers, princesses or vampires for the day. If you want out-of-the-ordinary results use other materials besides the basic paint. This article will show you some information about body glitter and jewelry and how to use them to boost your face painting design.

Glitter

Here are some of the things glitter can do for your face painting design:

-New dimension - the sheen created by glitter gives your finished product a rounded effect.

- Visually interesting - glitter can be used to emphasize a certain spot on the face such as the nose or the eyes.

- Adds a magical touch - glitter is perfect for fantastical themes like fairy and dragon designs.

Kinds of glitter:

- Loose glitter - is best applied while the skin is still moist with paint or water. It can come in a variety of colors, which can be metallic or iridescent. Loose glitter is great for emphasizing certain parts of your face painting design since they tend to have a coarser grain and therefore more reflective effect or "sparkle."

- Gel glitter - is a type of liquid glitter that sticks like a glue, only with glitters in it. Use this type of glitter to trace over the fine lines of your face painting design, as it is more convenient and gives cleaner results.

- Powder glitter - is powder-like in texture. These grains tend to be so fine that they easily stick on moist skin. It is best to use powder glitter on large areas of the face for that "pearly" effect.

Some tips on how to apply glitter:

-To get an even, glittery look, just dip a moist sponge in some glitter and softly dab over the face in gentle, sweeping motions.

- When tracing over fine lines, use only a fine brush. Wet the brush with water and pat with fingers to squeeze out excess water. Dip the brush into glitter and sweep over details in abrupt motions.

Glitter as Skin Jewelry:

Stick-on jewelry can be used with your basic face painting design to add more texture. Skin jewelry is:

- Inexpensive - skin jewelry can be found in a crafts shop, department store or online. They are often made of plastic so they usually cost close to nothing.

- Easy to use - all you have to do is peel the back of the jewel and stick on the skin.

- Reusable - there are now skin jewelry that can be put on, taken off and then applied again.

- Versatile - skin jewelry come in a variety of shapes, colors, textures and styles.

You don't have to buy expensive materials to get beautiful face painting design. All you really need to add more dimension and texture to a basic design is by simply using glitter and stick-on jewelry. Proper usage is easy to accomplish and can give you more than just the usual face painting design. - 2361

Evolution of Photography: From Film to Megabytes

By Yars Revenga

Technological advances has catapulted photography onto an whole new level. Advanced techniques and equipment are always on the horizon.

35mm film, also referred to as 135 film, can be used for still photographs and motion pictures. The 35mm camera was put on the market in 1934 and was a best seller by the late 1960s and still enjoys success today.

Creating standards in photography is one of the ways ideas are able to flow smoothly. The 35mm film format could be the most popular format of all time. Most rolls of 35mm film come with 36 exposures although this number can vary depending on cost and need.

The American Tourist Multiple was first introduced in 1913. It was very expensive for the average consumer. In 1925, the 35mm Leica was released and created a boon for photography hobbyists and enthusiasts across the globe.

The Germans produced the 35mm Leica which took the world by storm. It has since taken over the world of photography as the standard in cameras. Outfitted with a superior lens in addition to its compact size, it's no wonder the 35mm Leica has its world class reputation.

Before 1934, camera film was not so neatly compact and easy to handle. The film cartridge which we are accustomed to seeing today was utilized by the Kodak Retina which hit the markets in 1934. Nikon contributed to the world of photography with the first SLR camera.

A new technology hit the photography scene in the form of Single Lens Reflex. This type of camera created a much friendlier user experience by providing a viewfinder and preview screen. The SLR cameras advance the film via motor freeing you from manually forwarding your film.

Traditional 35mm film camera sales took a big hit when digital cameras first hit the scene. But with the advent of Digital SLR cameras, the 35mm seems to have weathered the storm and is regaining its popularity.

The camera industry is topped by Kodak, Nikon, Olympus, Fuji and Canon. Their endeavors and dedication to research and development will no doubt yield yet another breakthrough in the world of photography. Despite sweeping technological advancements, the 35mm film camera will always have a place in history. - 2361

6 Annual Photo Contests That Could Bring You Fame And Glory

By DeeDee Dobson

Sometimes you need a little bit of a push to get creative with your camera. It's easy to get stuck in old habits, and having a goal in mind at the outset can sometimes bring out new ideas and unexpected insights. Entering photos in competitions not only gives you something to work towards, it might also bring you worldwide exposure (as well as more tangible rewards).

Below are 6 annual contests that will challenge your creativity and hopefully bring you worldwide recognition:

Leica's Newcomer Award For the past 30 years, the Leica Oskar Barnack Award (for pro photographers only) has honored outstanding photographers from all over the world as the winners of this prestigious contest. This year, they decided to add a new category, the " Leica Oskar Barnack Newcomer Award", open to "prospective professional photographers" under the age of 26. To enter, submit a series of max 12 photos depicting "the interaction between man and the environment" on or before March 1. There is no entry fee, and the Newcomer Award is $2,500 Euros, and your work exhibited in Leica's online gallery.

IPA - International Photography Awards This competition is open to professional, non-professional and student photographers, and there are lots of categories to choose from. A few examples are Bridges, Underwater, Self-Portrait, Micro and Digitally Enhanced, and the cost to enter (for non-pros) is $25/single image, $50/series (2-5 photos), and $15 for each additional category. The jury selects 21 category winners, and each receives a Certificate of Achievement, tickets to the Lucie Awards ceremony, and the annual IPA book. In addition to that, the top three winners get cash prizes ($10,000 and $5,000), Lucie statues, and exhibitions of their work, and The Photographer of the Year also gets to travel to the Czech Republic and be featured in and shoot a portion of a Pilsner Urquell documercial. The deadline is March 27, 2009.

Underwater Photo and Video Competition This competition is open to amateurs only, and if you enjoy diving and snorkeling, it's definitely one to put on your "submit list". There are 5 photo categories: Conservation, Majestic, Togetherness, Macro, and Wide Angle, and they are obviously looking for photos taken underwater. And check out the prizes: diving trips to the Solomon Islands, the Cayman Islands, Bonaire, Hawaii, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and Honduras, hotel stays and dive packages in several different (exotic) locations, equipment, gift cards and much more. The entry fee is $10/image, and you can enter as many as you like. The Underwater Images competition is a non-profit corporation and all proceeds from this competition go to marine conservation, education, and scholarships, so this is money well spent. The deadline is April 1, but for an additional $5/image, you can enter as late as April 10.

2009 National Wildlife Contest This is the 39th annual photo contest held by National Wildlife Magazine, and they welcome pros, amateurs and youths (13-17). The categories are: Mammals, Birds, Other Wildlife, Backyard Habitats, Connecting People and Nature, Landscapes and Plant Life, and, new for 2009, Global Warming and Wildlife. It's $15 to enter, and you may submit up to 20 photos before the July 20 deadline. The fee also includes a one-year membership to National Wildlife Federation AND six issues of the magazine, so it's quite a bargain! Prizes include cash ($1,000 and $5,000), field guides, calendars, and your photo(s) online and in print.

National Geographic's World In Focus If you've ever leafed through an issue of National Geographic, you know that they are used to stunning photography. There is some serious competition in this one, but don't use that as an excuse not to enter! No details have been announced yet for the 2009 contest, but the deadline is normally in late summer/early fall (check their website for updates), and categories last year were: Sense of Place, Outdoor Scenes, Travel Portraits, Photo Essay and Spontaneous Moments. The entry fee is ordinarily $12/image for amateurs and $35/image for pros. Prizes in 2008 included camera gear, photo workshops, trips to various exotic locations, and your image in print and online.

Islands If you, like me, love to travel, you'll want to keep an eye out for the next annual photo contest by Islands Magazine. The deadline for 2009 was January 31st, so we missed that one, but on the upside, that gives you almost an entire year to travel and shoot in preparation for the next. Since they want island-based travel photos, that's a thoroughly enjoyable assignment if you ask me. The entry fee is usually $3/photo, and among the prizes this year were trips to Aruba, Oahu and Fiji! - 2361

Cancelled TV Shows

By Charlie Reese

Sometimes, a television series is cancelled before anyone in the series is ready for it to be. Cancelled TV shows are a part of life for networks that look to the ratings as their guide. Some series only last one or two seasons. In some cases, the shows have received critical acclaim and have a large fan base. Fans have mounted protest campaigns to bring a show back. Some have returned, only to flounder again. In the end, the viewing figures have to justify the enormous cost that goes into production. Working in TV is a precarious career and nothing can be taken for granted.

Cult followings may not be enough to save some productions but many cancelled TV shows will not be forgotten and they live on in re-runs and DVD releases. It's strange to think that the original Star Trek was axed despite the pleas of Trekkies everywhere. It debuted in 1966 on NBC and the first two seasons received Best Dramatic Series nominations. The final episode was broadcast in 1969. The series has now been remastered. Since then, the franchise has blossomed with Star Trek movies, and more TV series with Star Trek: The Next Generation, Deep Space 9, Voyager and Enterprise. Trekkies now await the release of a new film based on this original show.

ABC premiered its drama, Day Break in 2006, only to air six episodes of the thirteen that were made. The unshown episodes were later broadcast on the TV One cable network. The plot's main character was detective Brett Hopper, played by Taye Diggs, previously seen in Private Practice. Hopper has been framed for murder and sets out to prove his innocence. The twist to the show was that the detective was in a time blip, as in Groundhog Day, and had to re-live the same day. A DVD of this one season cancelled television show is available with commentary from stars of the series.

Sometimes, a sequel does not have the same success as the original that inspired it. Nevertheless, Joey has a loyal following. A spin off from the mega hit Friends, Joey's debut was on NBC in 2004. It was cancelled in 2006 without finishing its run of episodes. The Joey Tribbiani character was reprised by Matt LeBlanc. Joey has re-located to Hollywood to further his movie ambitions and lives with his sister Gina (Drea de Matteo) and his nephew Michael (Paulo Costanzo). Old buddy David Schwimmer, who played Ross Geller in Friends, lent his support by directing a couple of episodes. The axe still fell even after the show won the People's Choice Award for Favorite New Television comedy. The DVD of the first season is widely available but the second season DVD has limited distribution so far and has not been released in the USA or UK.

Arrested Development was a Fox sitcom, centering on the Bluth family. It ran from 2003 to 2006, winning 16 Emmy Awards and it broadcast around the world. The show's dysfunctional family could not be saved but there are plans for a movie version. Ron Howard was the Executive Producer and narrator for the cancelled TV show, which starred Jason Bateman, Jeffrey Tambor and Portia de Rossi. Recurring roles were played by Ed Begley Jr, Henry Winkler and Liza Minnelli. - 2361

How To Improve Your Landscape Paintings Through Glazing!...

By Anna Meenaghan

When would you use glazing? Well, sometimes personally, I have found that I am not satisfied with the look of a painting as sections of it seem quite drab, with the colors not penetrating through. Then I resort to glazing.

It could be that I did not make a good job of it which has disappointed me. However it could just be that I have overdone how much turpentine I have used. So I have had a bad day. We all experience these at some time or another. One of life's trials.

Generally glazing can be a godsend. It can be used in many ways. Personally, I could not do without it. I find that it brings my work to life as it were. It is an important step of the artwork that was invented years ago.

So you need to bring your painting to life. Do not underestimate the value this process can give to your work. This can provide the ultimate glow you require for landscapes, skies, water, trees, mountains etc. You will find it brings out hidden depths. It will also serve on certain sections or just bring your whole piece together to it's conclusion.

What actually happens, is that you cover it with a very fine film of color over another, but please be sure to let the first coat be perfectly dry. I liken it to glass actually as really it is like the sun peeping through on your work. You may then come to realize you can bring coldness or heat to your work.

Nobody wants to deal with the problems of the color shades all running together. I cannot stress enough the importance of your work being dry first, and it pays to have transparent colors on top.

You will have come to realize now that this is a very important step of your work. It can bring about the feeling of distance and space, but also adds strength and purpose to your work. I love using it as it seems to successfully bring my work to a happy conclusion.

I would not say that glazing is ever easy. It takes plenty of practice with your colors to achieve a satisfactory result. You just have to keep trying to reach your goal.

So now you have reached the experimental stage. For instance try a warmer colour over a paler shade. Like a strong violet over a pale yellow, or a dark green over yellow. I find it inspirational the strength of colour that can be produced.

There are certain rules to remember when you glaze. An absolute must is to not mix any white paint with the color you wish to glaze with. If you only use oil with it you can go about it by stroking it on gently.

Although, I might add, that other artists that I fraternise with, use a layer of gel. For me red is a very vibrant colour. Therefore I like a stronger red than I find in a normal palette. So what do I do? You've got it, I lay one red on top of another. Yes, as far as it goes I think the finished effect is fabulous! - 2361

A Guide To American Train Series - Lionel Model Trains

By Jack Dubus

The American Flyer is probably the most well known of all model train series. They did achieve their peaks around the 40's and some other peak in the 60's, they had been around for much longer then that. Their popularity is also very famous now too and they are, I feel they are going to be still here another 100 years!

A toy maker in Chicago called William Hafner, in the very early 20th century built a model train developed on a clockwork motor, primarily for the use in toy cars. By about 1905 how ever he decided to put them into use in model trains too. Good thing he did, the model cars sold no where near as well as the trains.

William Hafner and his partner share the same name, William Coleman approached a small manufacturer of hardware, Edmonds-Metzel. They used this company to start selling clockwork trains in 1907.

They were first commercialized under the name of Edmond Metzel trains, because they were so hot on demand they needed a perfectly new name and they came up with the name of the American Flyer. This came about in 1910. Even the name of the hardware company they were using had too changed its name to incorporate the American Flyer name in it.

They were very popular and there are a couple of reasons for it. They were quite easily affordable then other popular makes of model trains at the time and because they were also quite a bit more practical then more budget style model trains of the time.

Mr William Hafner draw out from the enterprise around 1913. He used the funds he had already made and set up his own corporation. Colemans American Flyer Trains. It did well for quite some time around the first world war. There was little to no competition at the time due to the war efforts. Right before the break out in 1938, the founders son with the same name, took over the business after his father died in 1918 traded the American Flyer to a firm called A C Gilbert Company. Gilbert already had experience in producing toys, but had never done so with trains.

At the same time he decided to moved the corporation from Chicago where it was created to New Haven in Connecticut where he stayed. He also began to drastically re design the American Flyer and turned it into an S-scale model train in 1939. This scale is a modification of the popular O scale or model which was then the leader on the market.

The S-scale was much tinier then the O-scale and this made it more well known known with enthusiasts as it required less room to setup a proper track. The scale is 1:64, considerably smaller then the O-scale yet still very detailed and accurate.

He too made another change in 1946 that improved the realisticness of the American flyer more so. Model trains, electric model trains at that time had been run on 3 rail tracks. Not virtual. He adjusted it so they ran on 2 rail tracks, much like their big counterparts. These tracks had 7/8th inches 'tween every rail. This made the trains run better as well.

How ever, television was beginning to take hold at this time too. This distracted numerous from their hobbies they would normally spend their extra time on. Also at this time, discount chain shops came into play, discounting train sets that companies like A C Gilbert could not compete with. in 1962, Gilbert traded the American Flyer to Wrather Group. This corporation made toys as well, but usually on a mass scale and tended to produce poor quality as well. Sales of course fell through the floor and in 1967 the corporation went bankrupt.

A higher-ranking toy train maker and the market leader at time, Lionel Corp purchased the American Flyer. This company itself was having trouble with finances as well and they too went bankrupt in 1969, so they sold off the rights to the American Flyer to some other maker, General Mills.

This firm, General Mills, started selling numerous of the designs of the original designed Gilbert American Flyer, it however sell everything it purchased from at that time Lionel Corporation to Kenner, who then in turn sold the organisation to a man named Richard Kughn. This occurred in 1985.

Mr Richard Kughn had great success with the firm and design for 11 years, but he sold out in 1996 to a enterprise known as Wellspring Partners, who then took on the first name of Lionel and called themselves Lionel LLC, which still operates today.

They sell the S-scale American Flyer still. They were actually concentrating on selling other scale models, but in 2002 they started selling more and more of the American Flyer.

The American Flyer nowadays is more then 100 years old and has gone through many extraordinary hands. It is still well known and growing stronger and stronger. Lionel trains will not disappear so fast - 2361

By Reese Lanter

Women have different body structure compared to men. Women are generally known to have curves and smaller figures compared to men. This is why tattoo ideas for girls differ from ideas for boys. Popular Body Part Tattoo Locations

Body part tattoo ideas for girls can be similar to those of boys. Girls however have specific body part recommendations in which their tattoos would look especially beautiful on.

- One of the most popular areas for tattoo ideas for girls to find their way to is the lower back or the tailbone area. This is a perfect spot for a lengthwise sprawling or vine inspired design. Advice of Photographing Wildlife

By SFXsource

Wildlife photography is a very exciting branch of photography, but it requires patience and dedication. It is very easy to become frustrated, but your efforts will be rewarded. Photographers may spend an entire day trying to get one particular shot! These tips are intended to either get you started photographing wildlife, or to inspire you to stick with it. There is a certain awe and beauty about capturing the natural world, particularly animals.

1. Be patient- this tip cannot be stressed enough. It is easy to get frustrated, but if you are willing to wait, you will be pleasantly surprised.

2. Don't get too close. It is likely that if you get too close to animals, they will run away. No matter if you are photographing in national parks, jungles, the wilderness, etc., it is of upmost importance to give animals space, and wait for them to come to you if they so choose (animal are very curious).

3. Photograph wildlife in their natural surroundings. It is fun to photograph exotic animals at the zoo, however it is best to exhibit wildlife where they actually live.

4. Play with using different shutter speeds. On one hand, if you photograph a bird flying with a fast shutter speed, you will "freeze" it in the action of flying. But with a slow shutter speed, you create a blurred effect.

5. Occasionally, the wildlife will compose the image for you (this is where it can be good to be patient). If you just look through your lens and observe the animals, you may be surprised and get some unique shots.

6. It will be in your best interest to purchase a zoom lens. Many times it will be hard to get close to wildlife, and a zoom lens gets you closer without putting you in danger and without disturbing the animal.

Remember to stay inspired by viewing the work of other wildlife photographers. You can search for wildlife photographers online or in photography magazines. - 2361
