How to Play The Piano

By Leo Prenev

Music is a word which carries many different meanings. For some people, it brings about joy and relaxation while at the same time for others, it can invoke passion and a yearning to earn money. Whatever you think of music, there is one thing that is certain. Music is here to stay.

Piano is one instrument which is liked and loved by many. It is the most familiar western instrument. Learning how to play the piano is easy as long as you have the interest, dedication and commitment.

If you want one on one attention, I would advise you to find a decent piano teacher in your local area. A good way of doing this is through browsing the local newspaper or online classifieds.

If you are stuck on finding a local teacher, depending on your location or situation, you could look into online lessons or lessons via a DVD set. In fact, lessons purchased from the internet have risen dramatically in the past few years and have been met with great success.

Once you take up music classes, it is necessary that you do your part and keep on top of the practice. By not practicing throughout the week, you will see a drop in skill and ultimately, a drop in self-confidence.

When you begin to play piano, you will become acquainted with different terms such as octave and pitch. Pitch refers to the sound of a particular note, whether it be high or low.

Octave refers to moving up the piano by eight keys at a time (more if you include black keys). If you put your finger on any white key, then go up 8 notes and press that key, that is an octave.

Whether you choose to take up piano as a hobby or a lifelong passion, commitment is essential. Practice will take you a lot farther than you could have imagined.
