A Look At Top Quality Cigar Humidors

By Doug Baker

Some time in the 1400s is when cigars became available as choices of enjoying tobacco products, and since then they have almost become an art form. People who collect cigars know the importance of how they should be stored, and that it is crucial to have one of the Top Quality Cigar Humidors to keep them safely contained.

Cigars must be kept in an environment that maintains the correct amount of humidity to prevent them from drying out and becoming brittle and tasteless. Therefore, it is critical for a humidor to have a built in hygrometer to monitor the inside moisture content of the humidor. The material used to line the inside of these cigar storage containers is important to the preservation process, as well.

Humidors come in all sizes, shapes and descriptions, and you can even get one custom made to suit your particular needs. Some people prefer a fancy box, while other people are more interested in the design and construction of the inside of the unit. Types of wood are usually used because they have the ability to breath, and can even add to the taste of the cigar that has been stored in them.

Spanish Cedar is thought to be superior to other types of cedar because it absorbs more humidity, and gives off a stronger aroma. However, don't assume that it is a tree that grows in Spain, when it is actually imported from Brazil. If the wood is carefully dried before being used in manufacturing, there will not be any resin formation to contend with.

American Cedar is often used by manufacturers because it is less expensive, and more readily available from the lumber industry. There is much less chance of resin build up from this variety of cedar, and it still has that strong cedar aroma which makes it a favored choice in humidors. It also carves easily and can be made into a very attractive item for any desktop.

Honduran mahogany is often used instead of Spanish Cedar because it has almost identical moisture abilities. One of the issues with this wood is that it can be riddled with worm holes which prevent a tight seal. However, when this wood is used as a veneer, that problem no longer exists and it delivers the same results as the most sought after Spanish Cedar.

When considering what humidors to buy, there is a choice between those made of solid wood and those that are only veneer. Due to the fact that wood expands, solid wooden cabinets could pose issues of stress on the seams which could cause moisture leaks and result in damaging the cigars. Veneers are sufficient at delivering the aromatic effect on the taste of cigars, and could possibly be a better choice than solid woods.

The art of collecting cigars will result in greater knowledge and understanding of what details to address, and knowing where the tobacco was grown is an important part in the proper setting of humidity for their storage. A Top Quality Cigar Humidor will have an equally good quality hygrometer to assure that the contents are being stored at a moisture level that is required.
