The best movie in the year 2000 was the hit film American Beauty. The film captured 5 Oscars including best picture. The film's star Kevin Spacey also received an Oscar for Best Actor in a Leading Role.
American Beauty is a story about mid-life crisis and people coming to terms with who they are. It is centered on a married couple with a teenage daughter. We follow the struggles they all go through in coming to grips with the various issues each has in their lives.
Kevin Spacey plays the father Lester, and he is going through a mid-life crisis. He hates his job, his family hates him, and he is simply bored with life. His wife Carolyn is always criticizing him, and his teenage daughter Jane is rebelling against her parents. She is disgusted by how they behave.
His wife Carolyn is all about the money. She acts like a bitch, and is always disapproving of both Lester and their daughter Jane. She is also having an affair with a married man who is a real estate agent like she is also.
Jane is the rebellious teenager who is searching for her own identity. Her best friend is one of the high school beauties who is really a phony. Her beauty intimidates Jane, who feels like no one will ever love her.
Eventually Lester "loses it" at work and quits his job. He gets a good severance pay because he knows some bad things the company has done. He leaves his job and finds work at a fast food place. He also starts working out, and smoking marijuana too.
Jane meets a boy she likes. Ricky is new in the neighborhood and has his own family problems, but he and Jane find they are falling in love. Ricky is also becoming friends with Lester because he is selling dope to him.
All these issues blend into an intriguing and interesting story with a stunning ending. I won't tell you any more so you can enjoy the movie fully. Don't miss out on this classic film. - 2361
