Dark Horizons

By Asmita Roy

"Case 39" is a horror film starring Rene Zellweger as family services social worker Emily Jenkins. Emily thinks she has seen it all until she meets her newest, most mysterious case, troubled 10-year old Lilith Sullivan (Jodelle Ferland). Emily's worst fears are confirmed when the parents try to kill Lilith, their only daughter. Emily saves her and decides to take her in herself until the right foster family comes along.

Pedophobia is a theme that has been explored a number of times in movies throughout the year and Case 39 is the latest is the latest to tackle the subject.

Snowed under child services worker Emily Jenkins (Rene Zellweger) is given a 39th case to deal with by her boss Wayne, played by Hustle's Adrian Lester. The case regards the apparent poor treatment of a young girl named Lillith (Jodelle Ferland) at the hands of her parents. Emily fights to have the girl removed from her parents custody, but struggles without the sufficient evidence.

Case 39, however, stands out because it differs from the traditional horror flicks that are predictable, but gory. The structure of the film is part mystery/thriller, creating alternative suspects while removing the attention from the supposed innocent protagonist.

The good aspects of the film include this early revelation. While some films have the main goal of revealing the evil source, Case 39 reveals the evil source within the first 30 minutes and leaves a sense of 'what now'. While all the facts have been given, the characters are now subject to development and depth, an angle which is often left out in horror films.

Another good element of this film is the plot development. This film is not predictable like many horror flicks and the turn of events is constantly surprising. While the evil source in this case is a child, the horror conventions of simply eliminating the evil source are challenged.

This film also differs in terms of originality, because the clues and answers to the question of what the evil or horror is, are given early in the film. It is revealed who the antagonist is and shows the characters who are affected by the actions and influences of evil. Furthermore, the protagonist is also presented as being an innocent women and it is apparent that she will be fighting this source of evil. - 2361
