The Evolution of the Trumpet

By Jim Samposzi

The trumpet, an instrument in the woodwind or brass group, is typically made out of brass or bronze and includes: a mouthpiece, bell, a spit valve, and buttons. This instrument is said to be fully chromatic because they have three different buttons for tone adjustments. Some trumpets also be built with a a trigger mechanism to correct unwanted sounds by the use of the main note buttons. This line can be initiated while playing the trumpet and the difference is so little that the audience would not notice. The spit valve is there to release any mucus that has slid into the chambers of the instrument. The history of the trumpet is very interesting and trumpets go long back in time; as far back as 2000 B.C.

The tones of trumpets are created by the coupling, inclusion, or emulation of the three finger controls. The sound generated is possible because of the vibration of the lips via the mouthpiece and then manipulated by the keys before the tone gets to the bell, or end, of the trumpet. The development of combinations of air manipulation became very important to the development of certain types of music. Because the keys can be changed to produce any sound, all kinds of music can include a trumpet sometimes.

Trumpets are pitched soprano style. This means, the chromatic range of pitches produced are from F sharp down to C - prior to the clef responsible for treble ranges. But, the abilities of this instrument are not held to that range in tones; some belt out notes in the G and high C array.

Trumpets, like many pieces of merchandise, come in many styles and brands. Some are better than others. Furthermore, and due to this range, they differ widely in price. And, some have other abilities for pitching that the others do not. The most well-known types and styles of this instrument are:

Piccolo, Brass, Herald, Natural, Slide and Bronze

The use of trumpets goes as far back as 2000 B.C. where they were included in religious service. The first types of trumpets included materials that were blown into, like: a length of bamboo, or horn from wildlife, or bone. The bible contains many references to the trumpet and trumpets were found in the tomb of the historic Egyptian King, Tutankhamen. During the 14th century, someone invented the folded trumpet that is like trumpets of modern days where the metal piping is folded and contoured from beginning to end. The earlier trumpets were merely straight and longer with a wide part on one end and a mouthpiece on the other. When operas were popular, the trumpet was put to use in 1607 during a well-known Opera called Orfeo. Later on in history, trumpets were included in military communications but were later seen as a musical instrument. In the 19th century, the trumpet became the primary instrument in symphony orchestras. Today, the trumpet can be seen in jazz bands, military productions, marching bands, and sometimes rock groups. - 2361
