Onkyo TX-SR607 Plus Review

By Richard Greenwood

Looking for a home theater system capable of handling anything you throw at it? Check out the Onkyo TX SR607 Plus. It's a Dolby 7.2 Channel A/V Surround Home Theater system, with 90 watts per channel, and HDMI support (going to the 1.3a specification). The system is relatively compact, about the size of a breadbox, and is comparatively lightweight at 18 points. This makes it an ideal 'starter' solution for people who live in an apartment building or flat, though it's probably overkill for a dorm room. (Not that that's ever stopped any of the college students we've known)

Because this is a modern digital audio controller, you may experience some legacy compatability issues. Make sure that you've got the adapter cables (if necessary) before trying to hook everything up. Nothing makes a home theater project more frustrating than having to constantly run to the electronics store to get more parts. Setup is pretty easy, with an on screen menu that will walk you through all the steps.

The sound of the Onkyo is amazing; it is crystal clear, so clean and sounds so open. It will make audio sound like you have never heard it before. So crisp and clear! If you choose to use it to listen to music, you will hear the words of the song more clearly than you have heard them before. You will hear the difference immediately.

Even if you are only using three speakers to connect to the Onkyo, the sound will still be perfect. If you are watching a BluRay movie you can expect realistic sound effects that can be heard when watching a movie at the cinema. Who needs to go to the cinema when you can bring the cinema to you! It is easy and affordable, and anybody can use it.

One of the downfalls of the Onkyo is that even though it states it is compatible with the CEG HDMI control through the Viera Link, many people have had a problem getting this to work properly. The HDMI seems to be difficult when you want to use it to play something. Even when it comes to connecting a BluRay player, it sometimes proves to be quite a task.

The RIHD is also supposed to work with Samsung, Sony, Toshiba versions, and should work with the Viera Link, but once again it proves to provide difficulties. However, if the problem persists and you cannot have the machine replaced you can get an IR repeater that will solve the problem. You shouldn't have to purchase additional equipment, but if you feel the need to at least you know what to get.

With all the reviews read on the internet, the feature of the Onkyo that people found the best was the sound quality. Most people said that they have never before come across something that can play such perfect audio. It shouldn't take you long to set up but it may take you some time to get used to.

While the configuration is a bit of a hassle, the feature set for the price is unparalleled. Strongly recommended. - 2361
