Vidalia onions were cultivated and sold to hundreds of stores across the United States since its humble beginnings in Toombs County 70 years ago. The Vidalia onion is a trademark variety of onion that offers a sweet and tasty blend to dishes.

As a quick history of Vidalia onions, the Vidalia onion was discovered in 1931 by a farmer named George Coleman. It was the start of spring and he discovered that the onion he cultivated was sweet tasting and not spicy. He thought it to be a great variety and decided to sell it for a higher price for bigger profits. Farmers around the county heard of Coleman's discovery and started to cultivate their own sweet tasting onions, thus the name Vidalia onions were born.

It was proven that the low sulfur content of the county soil and the mild climate of Georgia resulted to the sweetness of Vidalia's onions. Only a specific land soil in Georgia has the capacity to grow the same flavored onions. In 1990 the Vidalia onion became Georgia's State Vegetable. People from across the country visit Georgia to have a taste of their unique, sweet tasting onion variants.
