Learn to Play Guitar

By Greg Smithers

There are many different ways to play guitar. You should try them out to see what is best for you.

Group lessons: If you feel uncomfortable learning by yourself you can take group lessons. The advantages of group lessons are that you have a teacher to help you through tough times and you can see the other students progress and compare yourself to them. The disadvantage is that you won't get as much attention from the teacher as it will be divided.

Private Lessons: If you have the right teacher this is the perfect way to learn guitar. Your tutor can monitor you progress each lesson and slow down his lessons to your learning standard. Your teacher will never be caught up with another student because there aren't any - so he can attend to your needs.

CD Lessons: There are many instruction CDs available in nearly any style you can think of. The advantage of this style of learning is you can listen to the CD as many times as you want. Any part that is not clear can be replayed as many times as needed. The disadvantages include the songs may not be the ones you desire to learn and the instruction is more general without any way of knowing where you are in your musical journey.

DVD Lessons: Instruction on DVD includes all the good and bad points of the CD instruction. The number one advantage to learning guitar by watching DVD video is you can see what the instructor is doing. Visual learning goes a long way toward answering the questions burning in your mind.

Music Books: If you don't have much time to spend then you will enjoy using a music book as they dont have a schedule - you can learn when you want. There are a range of genres of guitar you can learn in music books. You must know your music otherwise you will have a hard time learning from a book.

Internet: These days the internet is one of the best ways to learn guitar. It has so many sites that can teach you that cool music you've always wanted to play. Membership sites are useful because they usually try to over-deliver and can give great value for money.

Friends: Never think that other guitar players aren't going to want to pass on their expert knowledge on guitar.

Slowing Down Recordings: This is a great way to learn since you can pick out notes at your own pace.

Playing with others: Another one of the best ways to learn guitar is to meet up with your guitar playing buddies and play together.

The method you decide to use to learn to play guitar is up to you. Try to practice four or five times a week for 30 minutes at a time and you will be playing guitar before you know it.

What is more important than the learning process you follow is the amount of effort you put it in.
