Jackson Electric Guitars: A Brief History

By Vincent Roarden

Jackson Guitars, popular with heavy metal and rock guitarists, are famous in the guitar world for their out of this world look.

Grover Jackson was the owner and initial founder of Jackson Guitars. Grover was a partner of Wayne Charvel from Charvel Guitar Repair. The most famous guitar made by the Jackson Guitar Company is the Rhoads V model which was designed by the rock guitarist Randy Rhoads. Randy famously played with Ozzy Osbourne and Quiet Riot.

Grover decided to brand the Rhoads with his name instead of Charvel because he believed that the guitar would shock Charvel's traditional market. The Rhoads model spurred Grover to create the Jackson guitar company.

Harder rock and metal music artists loved the Jackson Guitar's out of this world look and innovative design. They were well known for their slim and stylish models.

Most Jackson Guitars, as well as many of theirs cousins from Charvel, have the distinctive Gibson Explorer-like spiked dropped headstocks. This look was originally designed by the late Randy Rhoads. One variety of this headstock has the spikes and tip upturned. Another well known Jackson design is the shark fin fret inlays.

In the Fall of 2002, Fender Musical Instrument Corporation acquired Jackson/Charvel. Consequently, operations were transferred to the Fender factory in Corona, CA. Fender is now developing and producing guitars that are approximately like the original San Dimas Charvels, except for a few touches.

Both Jackson and Charvel models are manufactured in Corona. As a result, many of the artists who were on the company's roster list in the 1980s and 1990s abandoned them to endorse other guitar manufacturers.

The guitarists that are still with the Jackson brand after more than ten years and who continue to play and abuse their guitars, include: Metal Mike, Phil Collen, Mark Morton, Chris Caffery, Carlos Cavazo and Rob Cavestany.
